Directions

The Thoreau Center for Sustainability is located in the rehabilitated historic wards of the Letterman Hospital, just inside the gates of the Presidio National Park in San Francisco, California. Tenant organizations housed in the Thoreau Center for Sustainability complex occupy twelve distinct buildings.

From San Francisco Airport and points South of San Francisco
From Highway 101 Northbound take Highway 380 West to Highway 280 North toward San Francisco. Follow the signs to Golden Gate Bridge — 19th Avenue — Park Presidio. After passing through Golden Gate Park, take a right on California St. Take a left onto Presidio Blvd. Enter the Presidio through the Presidio Gate and follow the directions listed below.

From the Bay Bridge and points East of San Francisco; and from downtown San Francisco
Take the Fremont St. exit (the first exit off the Bay Bridge). This exit will direct you onto Fremont St. Continue through downtown San Francisco – cross Market St. and then make an immediate left turn onto Pine St. Continue roughly two miles on Pine St. As you arrive at the top of a large hill, turn right on Presidio Blvd. Continue straight, enter the Presidio through the Presidio Gate and follow the directions listed below.

From the Presidio Gate
Enter the Presidio on Presidio Blvd. After proceeding down the hill, Presidio Blvd. will merge with Lincoln Blvd. At Letterman Dr., which is the second stop sign you will pass in the Presidio, you will see the Thoreau Center buildings – where Tides is located – to your right. Continue straight and make the first right after Letterman Dr. onto Torney Ave. and into the parking lot (this requires a tight, right-hand turn). After parking, you’ll see our sign, which says, “Tides Foundation / The Tides Center” between the two building wings that have balconies. Our entrance is behind the sign. If the front lot is full, there is additional parking located behind Thoreau Center.

From the Golden Gate Bridge and points North of San Francisco
From the Golden Gate Bridge toll plaza, proceed straight towards downtown San Francisco. Follow the signs to Lombard St. and the Presidio. At the fourth stoplight after the toll plaza, make a sharp right onto Lombard St. Continue straight to the Lombard Gate, enter the Presidio and follow the directions listed below.

From the Lombard Gate
Proceed straight on Lombard St. into the Presidio. At the first stop sign, turn right onto Letterman Dr. At the next stop sign, which is Lincoln Blvd., you will see the Thoreau Center buildings – where Tides is located – to your right. Turn right onto Lincoln Blvd. and make the next right onto Torney Ave. and into the parking lot (this requires a tight, right-hand turn). After parking, you’ll see our sign, which says, “Tides Foundation / The Tides Center” between the two building wings that have balconies. Our entrance is behind the sign. If the front lot is full, there is additional parking located behind Thoreau Center.

By Public Transportation
The PresidioGo is a free shuttle service for people who work or live in the Presidio. It runs clean-fuel buses between downtown San Francisco and the Presidio every 15-30 minutes each weekday. Downtown stops include Embarcadero BART and the Transbay Terminal. Click here for more information and the schedule.

The Presidio is also accessible by MUNI bus routes 41, 45 and 30 (from downtown SF/Market Street), 28, 29 and 43 (from other points in the city). Only the 29 and 43 serve Thoreau Center directly; others require a 5-10 minute walk from near the Lombard Street Presidio Gate. By Bicycle
The Presidio is accessible to bikes from any point in the city. For the best route, check the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition’s SF Bike Map & Walking Guide. From the East Bay, you can board the Oakland/Alameda Ferry (510.522.3300) with your bike and ride from the Ferry Building, or you can bring your bike onto BART during non-commute hours. Frorn the North Bay, the Golden Gate Bridge is open to bikers at all times – access is via Bridgeway from Sausalito.
